In memory of Atsuhito Nakata, UN Volunteer killed in 1993 E-mail

atsu paintingTimes have changed since 1993, when the United Nations Transitional Authority for Cambodia (UNTAC) supported the country’s first national elections. But the sacrifices made to help lift Cambodia out of conflict back then are not forgotten.

Exactly 20 years ago a UN Volunteer from Japan, Atsuhito Nakata, was killed in the line of duty while serving in Cambodia. His interpreter, Lay Sokphiep, was wounded in the attack and later died of his wounds.

The game changer against malnutrition E-mail

Can using fortified rice in WFP's school meals programme be the game changer in the fight against malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among primary school-aged children? A nine-month study to be conducted in 20 schools in Cambodia's Kampong Speu province is set to give us the answer.

Health volunteer ensures access to vital services E-mail

Svay Pak’s village health volunteer, Yei Sokly,  is one of two trained health support volunteers who work to address the health needs of the poorest people, in urban settlements in Phnom Penh. Sokly received seven days training from the municipality operational health district with funding from UNICEF, and the Nordic Committees for UNICEF.

IMF 2013 Outlook for Cambodia E-mail

Phnom Penh, 8 January 2013

IMF Executive Directors commended Cambodia’s resilient economic performance and the authorities’ prudent policies. They agreed that the outlook is favorable but stressed the importance of rebuilding policy buffers to guard against risks, including from external spillovers and high domestic credit growth. Over the medium term, further efforts are needed to diversify the economy and achieve stronger, broad-based growth.

Cambodia Ratifies Disabilities Convention E-mail

Phnom Penh, 21 December 2012

Cambodia has now officially ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which will enter into force in the Kingdom on 19 January 2013.
