Support of Gender in Cambodia

The United Nations has advocated and supported gender equity since its inception. In Cambodia, gender is a central theme specified in the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2006-2010 (UNDAF) and national policies in guiding programs and planning to achieve lasting and far-reaching development goals. The Royal Government of Cambodia has committed to various gender-sensitive initiatives and acknowledges the importance of women to national development.

The UN is strategically positioned to support the Government to implement its commitments and National Strategic Development Plan. The UN system has contributed to many of the advances that Cambodia has made in raising the status of women.

The UN supported the Cambodian delegation to prepare for and report to the CEDAW Committee in New York in early 2006. The UN system will maintain its commitment to supporting the Government and civil society follow up with the CEDAW general recommendations and the committee's concluding comments to ensure that they are adequately addressed in time for submission of the next report, due in 2009.

The UN system has successfully joined forces with partners at multiple levels to carry forth its joint vision of development in the area of gender. It strives to strengthen those partnerships while forging new ones that will contribute to a greater and lasting impact.
