By the year 2020, Cambodia hopes to cross its name off the United Nations list of Least Developed Countries.
Decades of isolation and conflict devastated much of Cambodia’s physical, social, and human capital. But efforts begun in the 1990s by the United Nations, the Royal Government of Cambodia, donors, and civil society have already made significant advances in improving the conditions of the country.
Despite this Cambodia still remains one of the poorest countries in the world. In the latest figures from 2003, Cambodia ranked 130 out of 175 countries in the United Nation's Human Development Index. Much more work is needed, especially if Cambodia is to achieve its Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015.
In order to help reach these critical development objectives, the United Nations Development Program works in six main program areas. All of these efforts are guided by the Cambodia Millennium Development Goals and the Royal Cambodia Government’s National Strategic Development Plan.
