The UN Volunteers (UNV) programme supports the work of the UN, and particularly UNDP, by promoting the achievement of the MDGs through volunteerism. The programme deploys both international and national volunteers as advisors or technical specialists. They work on specific projects with international, governmental and civil society organizations. UNV also supports local volunteer sending agencies through its various funding facilities. Volunteering contributes to a more cohesive society by building trust and understanding.

National ownership, training, advice, promotion of partnerships, and networking are all important aspects of the work of UNVs.
