At the launch of the National Social Protection Strategy for the Poor and Vulnerable in Cambodia
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia,
Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my great pleasure to be here today on behalf of the United Nations in Cambodia to join with the Royal Government of Cambodia to officially launch Cambodia’s National Social Protection Strategy.
The endorsement of the NSPS on the 18th of March this year, was the result of years of consultation and collaboration. So many of you here today invested much time and energy into the Strategy, which I believe is a document Cambodia can be very, very proud of.
I have spoken many times in the past about the importance of social protection strategies in protecting Cambodia’s most vulnerable, particularly women and children, by providing them access to essential services, especially during an emergency and crisis.
The development of new social safety nets as well as the expansion of existing ones, nurture better coping mechanisms. By distributing resources to the poor and most vulnerable, social safety nets can have an immediate impact on poverty and inequality. Read more...
