UNV began its operations in Cambodia soon after the establishment of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1992. In the course of the following two years, over 700 international UNV volunteers were deployed in support of the electoral process and the massive humanitarian and relief effort. In the subsequent development stage, over 500 UNV volunteers have served in Cambodia with almost all UN agencies and some Government bodies and NGOs. Since 2006, UNV has also been supporting national volunteer organizations to deploy local volunteers for grassroots initiatives in some of the poorest rural provinces of the country.
