Overview

UNFPA presents its office in Cambodia on December 19th, 1994. Since its arrival into the country, UNFPA has beeen supporting Cambodia's Government in identifying, recognizing and addressing population issues as a key element to promote sustainable development. Further, it has strongly pursued reproductive rights and gender equality as essential elements to achieve human rights and human dignity.

Early assistance to Cambodia led to the completion of the 1998 Census, the first census undertaken in three decades. Further, it achieved the nationwide introduction of birth spacing services.

A Third Country Program has been recently developed. The program has been developed within the framework of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2006-2010, and has taken into account the Government's "Rectangular Strategy". It aims contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It will also foster to advance on the recognition and protection of women's and girls rights, the promotion of human rights and good governance.

By doing this, UNFPA has expanded its support to key implementing government counterparts including Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women's Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Economic and Finance and the Council Development of Cambodia as coordinating bodies. The collaboration with the Cambodian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (CAPPD), the National Assembly at the legislative level has been continuously strengthened toward advocating and promoting the ICPD, MDGs global goals. Besides these, UNFPA has worked closely with key NGO partners in order to address the youth sexual reproductive health and services.
