Cambodia's First and Second Country Programmes
UNFPA Cambodia supported gender equity and mainstreaming initiatives in both its first and second country programmes. Key achievements included:
Strengthened capacity of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to undertake gender mainstreaming and advocacy initiatives
Establishment of gender focal points in 10 line ministries, non-governmental organizations and a parliamentarians association.
Integration and prioritization of gender issues in the National Strategic Development Plan 2006-2010, the Government’s Rectangular Strategy and the National Population Policy.
Cambodia's Third Country Programmes
UNFPA Cambodia’s Third Country Programme covers three areas: Population and Development, Gender and Reproductive Health. For the area of gender, UNFPA has identified two key outputs and priority initiatives for 2006-2010 as follows:
Output 1: Strengthened capacity of priority ministries, selected commune councils and the media to promote the empowerment of women and youth.
Key initiatives include:
- creating gender groups in priority ministries;
- integrating and monitoring gender mainstreaming in sectoral and decentralized plans;
- supporting the implementation of gender-based violence policies and laws at the local level;
- advocacy efforts to change attitudes towards gender equality;
- strengthening the capacity of women's and children's focal points and committees in the commune councils.
Output 2: Increased awarenness and empowerment of women and youth in the priority areas to claim their rights to gender equity.
Key initiatives include:
- advocacy and awareness initiatives at the local level focusing on women's rights, reproductive health issues and gender-based violence.
Since 1994, UNFPA has supported Cambodia governmental and non-governmental organizations to address gender issues including the Ministry of Women's Affairs, and the Cambodian Association of Parliamentarians for Population and Development.
