1994-2005: UNFPA Cambodia’s First and Second Country Programmes
UNFPA Cambodia supported population and development initiatives in both its first and second country programmes.
Key achievements included:
Successful completion of the 1998 Census, the first census in three decades.
Development and launch of Cambodia’s first National Population Policy (2004).
Completion of the 2004 Cambodia Inter-Censal Survey (CIPS), and the Cambodia Health
Demographic Survey (2000 & 2005).
Increased understanding of population issues among government officials, policy makers and planners.
Increased availability of data to inform and monitor national policies
and plans.
Integration and prioritization of population issues within the Government’s Rectangular   Strategy (2004)
Prioritization of population, gender and reproductive health issues in the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) 2006-2010.
2006-2010: UNFPA Cambodia’s Third Country Programme
UNFPA Cambodia’s Third Country Programme covers three key areas: Population and Development, Gender and Reproductive Health. For the area of population and development, UNFPA has identified two key outputs and priority initiatives for 2006-2010 as follows:
Output 1: Improved national and decentralized capacity to integrate and implement population, poverty and development issues within national, sectoral and decentralized plans.
Key initiatives include:

integrating population issues into the national strategic
development plan;
·
sensitizing planners on key population issues;
·
incorporating population issues into commune development plans
in priority areas.
Output 2: Strengthened national and
local capacity in collecting, analysing,
interpreting, disseminating and utilizing disaggregated population and
poverty data for decentralized planning, monitoring and policy-making.
Key initiatives include:
·
developing a SWAp for planning,
statistics and poverty monitoring;
·
supporting key data collection and monitoring activities such as
the 2008 census and the
2010 demographic and health survey;
·
supporting monitoring and reporting
for the national strategic development plan and the Cambodian MDGs.
Since 1994, UNFPA has supported Cambodian governmental
and non-governmental organizations to address population and development
issues including, The National Institute of Statistics, The General
Directorate of Planning within the Ministry of Planning, The Ministry of
Interior’s Department of Local Administration, The Centre for Population
Studies of Royal University of Phnom Penh, and the National Committee for
Population and Development (Council of Ministers).
